Nitrous oxide is a colourless, slightly sweet-smelling gas sold in small silver canisters or large medical-grade canisters. It is usually dispensed into a balloon from a “cracker” or dispenser.

- Oxygen Deprivation: High doses of nitrous oxide can lead to oxygen deprivation, which may result in convulsions, breathing difficulties, and, in severe cases, heart issues or loss of consciousness.
- Neurological Damage: Intensive, frequent use can lead to vitamin B12 deficiency, causing neurological damage. Symptoms include tingling and numbness in the hands or feet, uncoordinated walking, muscle stiffness, and overactive reflexes.
- Respiratory Issues: Nitrous oxide can slow down your brain and body’s responses, potentially causing fainting, loss of consciousness, or suffocation.
- Addiction and Dependence: Regular use can lead to psychological dependence, where users feel a strong urge to re-dose frequently.
- Physical Injuries: Using nitrous oxide in unsafe environments or while standing can lead to falls and injuries due to dizziness and loss of coordination.
