Symptoms of DMT to look out for:
Physical Signs:
- Intense physical sensations: Almost immediate increase in heart rate and breathing, which can sometimes feel overwhelming.
- Stimulation: Accompanied by sweating, chills, and muscle tension.
- Shaking, dizziness, nausea, and vomiting.
- Heavy body load: An increased sense of gravity making your body feel heavier than usual. These physical effects are typically short-lived but can be very intense.
Behavioural Signs:
- Profound changes in perception and mood: Intense hallucinations, seeing vivid colours, and hearing sounds that aren’t there.
- Distortion of time: Minutes can feel like hours.
- Emotional effects: Heightened sense of euphoria, giggling, and a deep connection to nature and those around you. These effects can be accompanied by confusion and difficulty focusing on reality.
- Thought loops: Repetitive thinking patterns and increased anxiety, especially if prone to it.
Dangers of DMT
- Intense and unpredictable effects: Short but powerful hallucinations can be alarming and sometimes overwhelming, leading to panic or anxiety attacks.
- Harsh smoke: Vaporizing or smoking DMT can irritate the lungs and throat, causing coughing and discomfort.
- Mixing with other substances: Combining DMT with alcohol, prescription medications, or other drugs can result in unexpected and harmful interactions, particularly with other psychedelics, cannabis, or ketamine. These combinations can amplify the effects and increase toxicity, leading to dangerous physical and mental health outcomes.
- Lack of quality control: Street-purchased DMT can vary widely in purity and potency, making dosing unpredictable and increasing the risk of taking too much, leading to more severe side effects.
- Intense nature of DMT trips can impair your ability to recognise and respond to real-world dangers.
